U.S. ARMY AIR FORCES NOMENCLATURE

IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR

In WW2, the "US Army Air Forces," always referred to an organization whose title was always plural. The contemporary syntax of the times was that air force designations be spelled out or in Roman numerals; for example, "Ninth Air Force" or "IX Air Force," but not "9th Air Force." Reporting to each numbered air force were subordinate, numbered commands, organized along functional lines. Combat commands were also designated with Roman numerals, usually (but not always) matching the number of the parent air force; for example, in the Fifth Air Force, Fifth AF fighters came under V Fighter Command, and Eighth Air Force Bombers came under VIII Bomber Command.
