Michael Claringbould discovered this intact Fifth Air Force A-20G in the New Guinea jungle in 1976, and in 1984 he helped the RAAF recover it. We thought you would enjoy this page of photos - the first five were taken in 1976 and the others taken during the salvage, except for the last two, being the end product. The second-last shows a restored RAAF airplane being an A-20A which was also salvaged from New Guinea and restored at the same time as the final shot - A-20G-20-DO serial # 42-86786, taken at Amberley AFB in Queensland, Australia only last year. This ship was The Hell'n Pelican II which was assigned to the 312th Bombardment Group and lost on 16 April 1944, Black Sunday. The remarkable history of this aircraft is covered in superb detail, with more photos and commentary on the CD ROM produced by www.pacificghosts.com |
