Our resident author says,
"This is my favorite 5th Air Force Photo by far. As soon as
I pulled the enlargement from an old cardboard box in Tennesee, I told
the owner, Mrs Stuart Fudge, that she harboured a treasure, and that
I would be honoured if she would let me copy it. The scarred photo was
taken with an old Brownie camera out of the right-hand side of a Mitchell,
en route to a New Guinea target. Note that the pilot in the next-door
Mitchell has the window open, and elbow out, whilst to his right again
a P-40N sits laconically in escort. The P-40N has a long-range fuel
tank slung underneath its belly, and the markings upon close examination
indicate 35th Fighter Group Warhawks and 38th Bombardment Group Mitchells.
The framing of the photo is perfect, and to me, this is the quintessential
5th Air Force photo".
