Although not fully identified, #77 is easily discernible as assigned to the 9th FS, the Flying Knights. Probably taken in early 1944, but certainly in New Guinea, the aircraft has a white-painted tail. This was done to assist immediately identify friendly from Japanese aircraft.

We know the model is a -16 due to the fact that the 9th was allocated Jugs in the serial number range #42-75***.

Note also the forward yellow cowl marking which appears on this giant fighter. The 9th flew first combat in Darwin with P-40Es. moved on to Ks and Ns, then transferred briefly to P-47Ds like this before becoming an all-Lightning outfit, flying mainly P-38Js and, towards war's end, Ls.
