Another perspective on the Fifth's maintenance crews

Loading a 500 lb bomb into an A-20G

A 500 lb bomb is being hydraulically hoisted into the bomb bay of a Douglas A-20G in the Philippines, probably at Mindoro. The A-20G was used primarily as a strafer, but nonetheless could carry four of these bombs.

Note the armourer is wearing an Australian hat - popular with ground crews to keep off the sun. The A-20G had a particularly strong airframe and it took a lot of damage to remove it from the air. Having said this, the A-20G also had a unique construction - its bomb bay doors were reinforced with a wooden planking interior - the only bomber in the Fifth's inventory to have this particular structural quality.
