No ! Despite the black skull & crossbones on the sign, this is nothing to do with VMF-212 or any other Navy Unit !

The 90th Bombardment Group came to call themselves the 'Jolly Rogers' and when they operated from Dobodura, New Guinea, this was the entrance to their mess hall and recreation hut. It was here that tired Liberator crews relaxed between missions, writing 'V-mails' home, reading, playing poker or chess, drinking, or wondering about their role in the universe.

The pyramid tents in the background held views of the muddy and mosquito-infested assembly area, where the breakfast chow lines would queue, whilst their brother aircrews in Europe were reduced to cold beer and leave passes to London, English villages and nightlife.

The 90th had a chequered history early on, but by war's end they were calling themselves the "Best Damn Bomb Group in the World".

From Australia to Ie Shima, they had earned it.
