Low-level beat up of Gusap

35th Fighter Group

Fifth Air Force

Thunderbolts conduct a low-level pass at Gusap upon returning from a mission. The timeframe is late 1943 to early 1944, and the clouds on the mountaintops in the background indicate that this shot was taken mid-morning.

The 35th Fighter Group operated 'Jugs' from Gusap at the same time. Perhaps the most unusual Jug accident at this field occured on 5th April 1944 when 2/Lt Albert H. Lane from this Group crashed into the Operations Shack on take-off. Lane's Jug was totalled, Lane was OK, but the shack needed extansive repairs.
