Men of the Fifth Air Force often needed jeeps for transport, and this
is from where several were "obtained", seen running around
Port Moresby's airfields.
We are suggesting inventiveness, not illegal acquisition. Outside the
normal allotments, several deals were done, mainly involving whiskey
for wheels. After all, Commander of the Fifth Air Force, General George
Churchill Kenney, had sought 'operators', not paper-pushers.
This is the Headquarters for the 1156th Battalion Quartermaster, not
far from Hanuabada village. Note the aircraft fuel drop-tank on the
wooden rack to the left. Hanuabada is still there today, as so are the
palm trees in the background.
