THE FORGOTTEN FIFTH AIR FORCE

The 93rd Bombardment Squadron of the 19th Bombardment Group receive a briefing at at Longreach, Queensland, where the squadron's briefing shack was particularly historic, being the original QANTAS hangar.

What or who is QANTAS ? ask many Americans. The name stands for Queensland And Northern Territory Aerial Services, yet today not only is QANTAS Australia's international airline. but it is also an icon of Australian history.

No room for sentimentality here ! The 93rd operated E model Flying Fortresses at this stage of the war. Here they are receiving a briefing for a mission to bomb Japanese troop installations at Lae, New Guinea. The photo was taken early to mid-1942.
