The 40th Fighter Squadron, calling themselves the Demons, first appeared in the New Guinea theatre in April/ May 1942. Many of their earliest Airacobras soon appeared with the colourful red demon Squadron logo painted on their doors as seen here.

This photo was taken at 7-Mile on 27th June 1942, and the pilot posing for the camera, complete with his leather jacket, is 2/Lt John Hall.
