As P-38 Lightnings and P-47D Thunderbolts gradually
replaced Airacobras as front-line fighters in the SWPA, some units were
not as fortunate as others. The 41st Fighter Squadron received instead
newer N-model Airacobras, and one of them is seen here.
It was recognised however that the Airacobra was suited
only to patrol work, which the 41st did before moving into P-47D 'Jugs'
in 1944. Most of their patrol work with these
N models was in the Ramu Valley area where they were based at Tsile
Tsile. From here they engaged and shot down many K-48 Lily bombers during
the Wau campaign.
ALthough the complete serial of this aircraft is unknown,
close examination of the original photo shows it is in the range # 42-19???.
The number 80 on the nose is a Squadron identification number. The photo
was taken at Wards Drome, which in the year 2004 had been built over
to become Port Moresby's primary industrial area.
