8th Fighter Group

Fifth Air Force

Two 8th Fighter Group P-400s are being refuelled early in the piece. These fighters replaced P-40Es of the RAAF 75th Squadron which had been fought virtually to a standstill by A6M2s of the Tainan Kokutai based at Lae.

This photo was taken at 7-Mile on 27th July 1942, and the gentleman straddling the nose of #17 is using a dipstick to measure the amount of transmission fluid left in the drive shaft gearbox - the Airacobra had its engine mounted behind the pilot.
