Slugsy Sachs was another example of Damon Runyon noseart assigned
to 1/Lt Thomas A. Gromley of the 89th Bombardment Squadron.
It was delivered by ship from Santa Monica, California, to the Commonwealth
Aircraft Factory near Melbourne in February 1944 where it was finally
assembled on the 4th of that month. Delivered to Nadzab via Sydney,
Townsville, Horn Island and Port Moresby it soon entered combat with
the squadron. This Havoc survived the war and, like so many others of
its ilk, was scrapped circa 1947.
In late 1943 Douglas Aircraft Corporation charged the US military $84,000
to supply them with A-20G-20-DO aircraft, constructed at their giant
Santa Monica factory.
