  B-17F 'Panama Hattie' Serial # 41-24381

63rd Bombardment Squadron

43rd Bombardment Group

Fifth Air Force

This old stager survived the New Guinea theatre and was last seen at Clark Air Force Base in 1948. No-one is sure what happened to her after this - the official records state that she she was scrapped, but was this at Clark ?

Panama Hattie was delivered to the SWPA on 6th August 1942 (three years to the day before Hiroshima), and served the 43rd Bombardment Group well. She flew in the Battle of the Bismarck Sea and many missions over Rabaul.

Panama Hattie was named thus by her crew as they had previously served in the Panama Canal with the Third Air Force. She proved, above all, a survivor.
