The early bombing missions by the Fifth Air Forces
E model Fortresses were mainly conducted from Australia, and staged
through Port Moresby. This one was not so lucky. It was named ‘The Daylight
Ltd’ and cracked up at Mareeba, Queensland, after Japanese fighters
shot her up over Milne Bay on 26th August 1942. The aircraft was assigned
to the 93rd Bombardment Squadron and was B-17E serial #41-2621.
