Like so many of her kind, Pete the Carrier has
a tragic and final history. Fighters near Wewak claimed her on 29th
August 1943. As 7.7 mm bullets from Oscar and Tony fighters tore into
her, seven parachutes blossomed just north of the Sepik River Delta
as her crew abandoned ship.
Pilot 2nd Lt Alexander F. North and his crew have never
been properly accounted for, as the badly fragmented wreckage of B-24D-115-CO
serial #42-40920 fell from New Guinea sky. At the time of her loss,
Pete the Carrier was assigned to the 400th Bombardment Squadron
of the 90th Bombardment Group.
