De Havilland Tiger Moth RAAF Serial A17-494

49th Fighter Group

Fifth Air Force

Although not strictly 'assigned' to the 49th Fighter Group, this RAAF Tiger Moth was used by the 49th Fighter Group in 1942 for communications and navigation training in the Northern Territory, Australia.

This rare color photo was taken at Strauss Field around June 1942, and shows a P-40 pilot from the U.S 9th Fighter Squadron taxiing out for take-off. The sparse gum trees in the background are typical of this northern part of Australia.
