The giant Curtiss Commando appeared late in the SWPA, and was mostly
flown by the 2nd Combat Cargo Group. The 375th TCG acquired some as
well however, replacing their trusty C-47s.
One of them is seen here, not wanting for noseart. Contrary to popular
perception, there were quite a few Commandos lost in combat, and in
fact one went missing right on Australia's doorstep.
On 28th February 1945 only ten minutes out from Darwin en route from
Biak, 1/Lt Glen R. Jacobs gave his last radio transmission and was never
heard from again. He was flying Sleepy Time Gal, C-46 serial
# 42-96786. It is about one of fifteen C-46s lost in the SWPA during
WW2.
