Japanese Surrender Markings
Dark green crosses were painted over the national ensigna on the Mitsubishi G4M1 Betty you see here, and the fuselage of the plane painted allover white. General Torashiro Kawabe Deputy Army Chief of Staff for the Japanese Army climbs out of the Betty at Ie Shima where he boarded a C-54 for Manila. There he would conduct surrender negotiations with General MacArthur's staff.

At Ie Shima, the Japanese delegation transfered to a C-54, where they met with MacArthur and his staff to negotiate the occupation of Japan. Note the open "clam shell" hatches above the cockpit.  On 28th August 1945, they returned to ie Shima where they reboarded their Betty, but the plane developed a fuel leak, and ditched in shallow water off Honshu. Apart from wet uniforms and a few bruises there was no damage except to pride.

The delegates waded ashore, the next day Kawabe finally delivered MacArthur's surrender instructions to the Japanese cabinet. History excerts from from The Forgotten Fifth chronology 151, page 90
