A fine study of a Warhawk at rest at Australia's top
end. The location is Strauss Field in the Northern Territory, and the
trees surrounding the aircraft are Australian gums.
This Warhawk was lost when Captain Robert D. Van Auken
bailed out of it near Darwin on 13th June 1942. He was attacking Japanese
G4M1 bombers based at Timor, and his Warhawk was struck by several 7.7mm
rounds from one of the Mitsubishis. Van Auken bailed out, landed in
the ocean, and was back at base within a few days. The Warhawk dived
into the sea.
