Close examination of this photo reveals the number 55
on the nose. The location is Strauss Field in Australia's Northern Territory,
and the timeframe is circa April 1942.
This particular P-40E was assigned to 2/Lt Clyde H.
Barnett of the 8th FS. Camouflage netting is draped over the gum trees
to the rear.
Serial numbers are inportant to determine the fate of
an aircraft, but those of the early days of the 49th Fighter Group have
proved elusive for many historians, including Aerothentic.
