Quality color photos of Fifth AF Lightnings are rare.
This fine study is of an 8th Fighter Group pilot, posing in his mount
at Biak in late 1944.
Note that the top canopy foled backwards, whilst both
side windows could be wound downwards like a car ! The black box in
the rear section is actually a VHF radio.
If you look carefully in the background you will see
both olive drab and all-silver P-47Ds of the 35th Fighter Group. After
the war Biak became a massive scrapyard for aircraft such as these,
fighters and bombers alike.
