Hollywood fans will be interested to know that In WW2 Gary Cooper was not only acting - he was singing. Cooper is seen here on a stage which was specially made at Dobodura in late 1943. Una Merkle was also part of of this USO tour.
Shows like this did wonders for morale, for the soldiers and airmen at such bases who for months had known little except fear, isolation and hardships. Air-raids were still a strong possibility during this time, and the American sense of humour showed its best. Special air-raid trenches were built for the 'stars', and their trenches were marked with large cardboard stars to indicate such. Fortunately they were never used.
