Another RAAF amphibian photo brought to you by Aerothentic

The rather unsightly Walrus amphibian, assigned to RAAF No. 9 Squadron, was used by the RAAF for Search and Rescue. It is seen at Saidor in May 1944.

The largest contingent of RAAF Walruses in the SWPA was based at Goodenough Island, to the north of New Guinea's coast, where they rescued more than their fair share of US crews, and RAAF Beaufighter and Beaufort crews.

These aircraft carried British serials and Australian markings, yet served in a predominantly US theatre ! The first batch of 24 delivered to the RAAF were actually Seagull Mk Vs which later became Walrusses. A further 37 were delivered during the war.
